On Friday, July 31st, we had an impromptu cook-out at our house prior to our adventure to the Cadillac golf outing. It was our honor to entertain such distinguished guests as our State Sponsor James C Varenhorst and Mary, PSP G. Fred Dill and Vi, our newly installed District Deputy Jan DeJonge and Gloria, and our State Chaplain Larry VandeVrede and Marian (Sharon and Larry’s mom). The food and camaraderie were enjoyed by everyone, which was evident as we started in the late afternoon and finished around the fire pit late that evening.

Then it was off to Cadillac, for a fun filled day of golf…..even the cloudy skies and rain could not dampen our spirit. Unfortunately the team of Quinn and Dill was handicapped because of my back injury (see Sturgis travels). Basically, as a 3-person team, exceptional golf skills were displayed and the team was 1 under after 14 holes. Due to incumbent weather ………..the girls decided, we were no longer going to play golf in these crazy conditions…and headed in for some warm refreshments!! (Much smarter than the guys who thought they could or should continue playing.) However, I feel compelled to convey a few of the highlights of our round to all of you. First, I thought this team was based on friendship; until PSP Dill tried to run me over with the golf cart…..twice, as he tried to get himself off the floor of the golf cart and kept hitting the gas peddle. Okay, so now I have a bad back, a sore leg, and a sprained ankle……thanks Fred! Not to be left out, Vi showed her golf savvy when after removing the flag from the hole, she continued to carry it to her golf bag as a souvenir. Hard to believe these are the parents of a very successful PGA golf professional!!

It was great to see the support from the Big Rapids Lodge to this outing, as they placed 2 teams in the event. I must admit when they play in future outings they need to provide for their own transportation to and from the golf course…….as it was necessary for us to transport one of the teams, along with their clubs back to the Cadillac Lodge. Exalted Ruler, Chad Curry and teammate John Sonntag showed great leadership skills in arranging for a designated driver, and had the confidence in the fact that Elks Care and Elks Share would assure them a ride back to the Cadillac Lodge for dinner…….and they were right!

Back at the Lodge, a wonderful meal was prepared and there were prizes for everyone. Thanks to the committee for putting on a great event. It’s always a pleasure for me to be surrounded by the members of my own District, their friendship and support is invaluable. A special thanks to PDDGER John Carlson, District VP Walt Hayward, Exalted Ruler Jan Beckelic, and the rest of the Cadillac officers for making us feel very special.
