Metro District Gold Key Golf

Metro Gold Key Golf Outing
August 7-9, 2009

On August 7th Sharon and I traveled to Port Huron in preparation of the Metro Gold Key golf outing. Upon arrival we were greeted by PSP G.Fred Dill and then taken on a tour of the city. We took a tour of the Coast Guard Cutter, the Bramble, stationed in the harbor there. Then it was off to a winery for samples and purchases. (Luckily for me they also had a micro brewery).

We then were entertained at the Dill’s until it was time to go to a party at Dennis and Nancy White house. They have this party every year for the Gold Key workers, Commissioners, and friends. We also got to celebrate 2 birthdays; Bill Russell and Chad High. Once again this became the highlight of the weekend.

Saturday morning it was off to golf at the Port Huron Lodge golf course for me and shopping for my wife. At the Lodge we were served a wonderful breakfast and assigned our starting hole for the shotgun start for golf.

The morning was cloudy with a strong chance of rain. This did not dampen anyone’s spirit as play began. Unfortunately, I was still unable to play due to the injury I sustained in Sturgis from my wife. (from now on it’s YES dear). The event was called after nine holes and a pool tournament was started to fill the void until dinner. Everyone seemed to take the rainout in stride. One would only wish the shopping trip would have been canceled. No such luck, as my wife saved me a lot of money because everything she bought was on sale. (The savings was over a hundred dollars…. lucky me?)

The golf tournament still raised thousands of dollars for our special need students. The support and generosity of our members are second to none. The Metro Gold Key Committee did an outstanding job in hosting this most successful event. This was the 22nd golf outing and their first rainout. Somehow it was my fault, like I control the weather?

Prizes were awarded and raffles were held, all in all a great day. Our first VP and I finally got to present PSP G.Fred Dill with his departing gift. The gift was a marble plaque with a grouping of three pictures of him. One as ER, DDGER, and State President. It showed the making of a leader.

This concluded the program and it was back to the Motel for further discussion on Elkdom and a game of cards. The rules of the card game took about 35 minute to explain and after numerous thought processes (arguments) the game began. When the game ended it was your State Secretary Lou Roos who ended up the winner (must have been his rules).

We had breakfast as a group on Sunday and then it was the long road home for some RR.
