Grand Lodge Convention

Grand Lodge Convention
Portland Oregon
July 5 - 9, 2009

Members All.

On July 2, 2009 Sharon and I headed out to PortlandOregon to attend the 145th Grand Lodge Convention. The Convention was highlighted by having a member from Area 4 elected Grand Exalted Ruler, the Honorable James L. Nichelson from Martins Ferry, Ohio. Michigan joined Ohio and the rest of Area 4 in the Monday morning “Celebration”. It was special to all those who took part in this important piece of history for Area 4.

On Sunday evening at the opening ceremony I had the honor of carrying the flag representing the State of Michigan. It was bitter sweet while I was so proud to reach the top of the stage (without falling) and able to represent all of you, it also came with tears as I remembered the last time I had the opportunity to go on that platform as Eleanor Arnold’s escort. She was a very special friend and was truly missed but I know she was proud of me.

As if this wouldn’t be enough excitement for one person, I also had the personal honor and privilege of nominating my mentor and special friend, Past State President Al W. Festa for the position of Grand Lodge Inner Guard. When you see Al be sure to congratulate him for obtaining this high honor.

So far the convention was going great for Sharon and me, one honor after another. All good things must come to end and that became apparent when our Ritual team from Sturgis had to settle for third place finish as they competed without the help of their liquid encouragement, (as that was consumed by yours truly). Even with this disadvantage they were able to place two officers on the All American team. Special congratulation to Lecturing Knight, Natalie Boland and Candidate, John Hayes. We should all be proud of this team as they were the best in our eyes.

We also attended two State dinners, Indiana and Michigan’s. Although different in styles both were excellent and well attended.

I attended all of the business sessions that were both informative and useful, and we were able to see our Association received many awards highlighted by watching Escanaba Lodge #354 being presented the All American Lodge Award. (You Rock) We also witnessed two of our members being installed as Grand Lodge Officers, Eric K. Mulholland as GL Trustee and Al W. Festa as GL Inner Guard. Then we were able to watch our District Deputies take their obligation. Congratulations to all.

It was then off to Seattle with PSP Chad & Sandi High for a little R&R, but to Elk’s R&R includes visits to various Lodges in the area. We met many new friends and a good time was had by all. (PS for the rest of this story……..contact Sandi High regarding our hotel accommodations.)

 Your exhausted State President,

 Kevin M. Quinn
