Houghton Higgins Octoberfest

Houghton Higgins Lake Lodge Octoberfest
Judges Clinic and State Presidents Night
October 2-4, 2009

Our travels took us to the beautiful Houghton/ Higgins Lodge on the first weekend in October. Friday night was a gathering of all those who would be attending the Ritual Judge’s clinic on Saturday. The clinic was conducted by Jim Warren our Grand Lodge Ritual Committee Chairman for Area 4 and Larry Kelly, State Chairman. Once again, his clinic was first class and well received by all those in attendance. Jim alluded to the changes in the ritual competition and further explained judging techniques to be used in competition. With the quality of the judges we have in Michigan it is easy to see why our association is always at the top of the leader board in competition.

I would like to personally thank the joint effort of the Flint/Sturgis team for putting on a wonderful rendition of the ritual to be viewed by all the judges. Also, heartfelt thanks to all those who become judges for their time and effort in insuring success for our State Association.

On Saturday evening; the Lodge was most gracious in presenting a special President’s night in our honor. The evening was highlighted by a wonderful meal prepared by Deak Waters and George Freel. These two gentlemen truly outdid themselves. The event was well attended and a great time was had by all (especially when Notre Dame, once again, pulled out a last minute victory). It’s great to be Irish!!  (If you’re keeping score; MSU beat Michigan………it’s hard to be humble.)

Sharon and I, along with the State Vice Presidents, want to give a special thank you to the Lodge for the beautiful crystal candy dish each of us received (and to the lovely ladies that purchased them, Fran & Jan). On these special nights, it reassures you that it is an honor and privilege to serve as your President. Thanks to everyone that helped make this night the success it was.

Kevin M. Quinn

State President
